Australia operates under a democratic, federal-state system recognizing the British monarch as sovereign.
Australia has three levels of duly elected Government - Commonwealth / Federal, State / Territory and Local. These are responsible for specific duties in the daily running of the country.
There are six states - New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania, Victoria, Western Australia - and two territories - Australian Capital Territory and Northern Territory.
